You may be asking yourself. Mike what in the flying fuck is a Chopped Cheese Sandwich? It’s really quite simple you see, it’s basically New York’s answer to the Philly Cheesesteak. The main difference being the use of ground beef rather than steak. I’ve heard these things are staples of the New York Lifestyle and have been fixin to make one for quite a while. So it really was an easy choice to make this for dinner.
The idea of this sandwich is very simple, this is drunk food. Simple as that, it’s got every thing you need in it; Meat, Cheese, Bread, and various fixings, but I really hate recipes that have a fucking short story before them so let’s get down to business…to defeat the Huns, little Mulan reference for you.
I started off by browning some ground beef and cooking in half a nicely chopped onion. I used 96-4 ground beef frankly because I like lean ground beef but you can use 80-20 if you are feelin it. Season as you wish, I used Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder, and Onion Powder
Second step is to assemble the fixings, a typical Chopped Cheese Sandwich will have the following ingredients; a Hero Roll, Shredded Lettuce, Ketchup, and Mayo. It usually comes with Tomato but I hate tomatoes with everything in me so I just left them out.
After assembling my Avengers I finished cooking the ground beef and added 5 slices of American Cheese
Since I used like 2.25 lbs of ground beef it definitely wasn’t cheesy enough so I added 3 more slices, to get cheesy with it
The finished result is a cauldron of cheesy, oniony, Beefy goodness
Doesn’t look too appealing, I get it. How classy could this sandwich be, answer not very but just Bear with me
I assembled the sandwich by slicing the bread and applying Mayo to one side of the roll. Then applying the Cheesy Beef, Shredded lettuce, more chopped onion (Because I’m crazy like that) and Ketchup. I personally used Red Gold’s Sriracha Ketchup, it’s one of my favorite condiments and gave the sandwich a little kick.
The end result was nothing short of wonderful. It was cheesy, it was beefy, it hit the spot. I see the appeal of this sandwich, and even though I’m more of a Philly Cheesesteak guy myself. If I have to make the sandwich I’ll make this iteration 10 times out of 10.
So what are you waiting for? Get yourself to the store and get you a little slice of New York
